Is a Business Valuation Report Required?

Find out before you pay for one

Not every situation needs a full business valuation, and some that seem like they don't actually do. If you're not sure where you stand, this is a quick, low-cost way to get a clear answer before committing to the larger piece of work.

We assess your circumstances and give you an objective opinion on whether a business valuation is required, whether one would be beneficial even if it isn't strictly required, and what type would suit if you go ahead. If you don't need one, we'll tell you that too.

When is a business valuation usually needed?

A business valuation is commonly required or worth having in situations such as:

  • family law property settlements

  • shareholder disputes

  • capital gains tax

  • business restructures

  • employee share schemes

There are others, and the right answer depends on the specifics of your situation, which is what the assessment works through. Some of these carry a strict requirement for a market value assessment; others are cases where a valuation isn't compulsory but puts you in a much stronger position.

What you receive

A clear, objective opinion on whether a business valuation is required or beneficial in your circumstances, backed by supporting reasoning rather than a bare yes or no. You'll know where you stand and what the sensible next step is.

What we need from you

To assess your situation, we'll need a few things:

  • the business's financial statements and tax returns for up to three years

  • answers to a short set of questions:

    • when the business was established

    • the ownership structure (company, trust or sole trader, and who holds the shares if it's a company)

    • the business website

    • a brief description of what the business does and where

    • how many employees are employed

    • how much time the owner spends in the business, in hours per week

That gives us enough to form a considered view rather than a guess.

How much does the assessment cost?

The fee is $600 plus GST per business. An engagement letter with the full terms is issued before any work begins, so the scope and cost are clear from the outset.

Independent and objective

We have no interest in selling you a business valuation report you don't need. The opinion reflects your actual circumstances, not our order book.

A cost-effective first step

For a modest fee, you avoid either paying for a full valuation you didn't need or skipping one you did, both of which cost far more.

Backed by reasoning

You get a clear view supported by the facts of your situation, not a one-line answer you can't act on.

The right next step

If you do need a valuation, we'll point you to the type that suits, so you're not over- or under-served when you commission it.
